Strand: Under The Dark Cloth is a wonderfully written and thoroughly researched video documentary about perhaps the finest photographer of all time, Paul Strand. Born in New York City in October of 1890 he spent most of his early years as a student of the camera and whom they say had an uncanny knack for it. He gained recognition in 1920s New York because of his ability to use his eye for photography as a tool to bring about social reform. His life is somewhat shrouded in mystery however as he was a loner. He tried his hand at motion pictures but found it hard to work with others. He preferred the sanctum of the darkroom. It is said that he was the first to introduce the photograph as an art form. 1l1z31
