Jacques and Patricia are two young lovers residing within a European hamlet at the don of the Great War. Jacques is called to serve as a pilot after his predecessor injured his leg. Jacques writes a letter for Patricia, although his mother resents the girl and leads her into thinking that Jacques has abandoned her. Despite later realizing that she's pregnant, Patricia refuses to remarry and is disowned by her clan. Jacques eventually makes his way back from the war and is forced to grasp with the mantle of fatherhood.
